Expository Essay


Choose one of the following to explore in an expository essay. Cite only from So You Want to Talk About Race to support your thesis.

  1. In what ways is intersectionality a helpful method for defining one’s identity? Conversely, what challenges does intersectionality present?
  2. What are microaggressions? And why are they so often dismissed by certain segments of our society?
  3. On the surface, the “Model Minority” label might seem like an gratifying term for Asian-Americans, but why might it actually be problematic? How does that label work against Asian-Americans?
  4. How are Black people made to feel like their hair isn’t their own? How does uninvited touching violate their space and dignity?
